Andre Van Pier

"Under the Sea" Dress

This dress came to us in January 2018 from a private collector who had acquired it from the previous owner who acquired it at an auction in 2011.

Designer Andre Van Pier custom-made this beaded, floor-length, long sleeved, “Under the Sea” evening dress to be worn by Princess Diana. The fabric is an iridescent pale fog blue with silver blue beads, abstract shells, starfish sequins and a pearl-beaded embellished motif. Also features a thigh-high split.

This dress, along with a few others worn by the Princess, were given back to Andre Van Pier by Princess Diana to be part of an exhibit of his garments to be displayed at the Guggenheim in Dubai.  Van Pier’s untimely death in 2008 prevented the completion of the concept and his collection was auctioned off in 2011.

The “Under the Sea” dress was on display at the “Diana Legacy of the Princess” exhibit at the Queen Mary in Long Beach in 2013.
