“After seeing her every day for over a decade, it was fun to relive the memories,” Dalton told People, in support of the forthcoming book It’s All About the Hair—My Decade with Diana, which was written by his friend, Renae Plant. He added that the book was written to show “how funny Diana was...just what a wonderful, genuine person that she was.”

Renae Plant is on a mission. The Australian native, who lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Livinio Stuyck, and their three children, has made it her life’s work to support the legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales by reuniting thousands of the late royal’s items.

As part of her daily routine, the princess said that her one true extravagance was having her hair washed and blow-dried every weekday morning, first by hairdresser Richard Dalton and then by Sam McKnight, and both men became trusted confidants.”

The world didn’t get a glimpse of the backup design until 43 years after Diana and Prince Charles said their ‘I do’s,’ at which time Elizabeth recreated the version that had been left in the wings. She used sketches and photographs as references to get the design just right. Commissioning the recreation was Renae Plant, director and curator of The Princess Diana Museum. "Part of what is special too is that it hasn't been seen in public, and now we get to show it to the world."

Diana’s ‘Caring Dress’—a vibrant floral number by Bellville Sassoon—played a part in many meaningful moments in her royal career. She wore it during visits to hospitals and engagements with sick children, reportedly because she knew that children would like the colors of the outfit. The dress sold for $520,000 in June 2025 through Julien’s. Its buyer? Renae Plant, a woman who’d met Diana as a child in 1988 when the princess visited Australia wearing the ‘Caring Dress.’

Richard Dalton worked with Diana for over a decade. According to him, the princess didn't use a professional makeup artist for most of her appearances. She preferred to apply her own products, even when he styled her hair. Only a few special occasions, such as official portraits or family photo shoots, required the services of a professional makeup artist—Mary Greenwell, in particular. This independence demonstrates how much Diana valued a simple, personal beauty that reflected her own style.

Styled by her longtime hairstylist Richard Dalton, the Princess of Wales appeared with her short hair swept into an elaborate chignon that framed her Spencer family tiara. The look was widely praised in the press but, according to Dalton, it crossed an invisible line at the top of the royal hierarchy. Dalton, who worked closely with Diana throughout the 1980s, recalled the fallout in a chat to promote his inclusion in the new book It's All About the Hair: My Decade With Diana by Renae Plant.

Reflecting on adding the Caring Dress to her collection, Plant tells Marie Claire, "I knew she [Diana] wanted that dress to be in The Princess Diana Museum, to represent exactly who she is. The kindness, the compassion, the children, the humanity—you know, that just signifies absolutely everything that she stood for. And to be able to have it as the feature in the museum, it's just mind-blowing."

Richard Dalton, who served as Diana’s official hairdresser from 1981 until 1990, tells PEOPLE that the royal couple found themselves in the middle of an uproar during their April 1983 tour of New Zealand.

Renae said: “Yes we are taking the Princess Diana Museum on a global tour starting November 2026 - I can't disclose the premier location just yet until it's officially announced - but it will start in California and move from there.

Richard Dalton tells PEOPLE that Diana asked him to “smuggle” the papers in because of restrictions she faced inside the palace. "She wasn’t allowed to see the tabloid newspapers,” he tells PEOPLE. “One of the hairdressers smuggled them in,” Dalton shares with a laugh. “Did I say that? They were smuggled in, but it’s not to do with me,” he adds jokingly. "She used to say, ‘Richard, can you bring them in for me?’ " Dalton recalls the princess asking. "Nobody questioned it because nobody knew."

Dalton confirms that "unless she was doing a portrait or something like that," Princess Diana preferred to do her makeup herself. "If it was like a photo shoot or, you know, official pictures with Charles or the boys. Yes, it would be a makeup artist," he says. Otherwise, "she did her own makeup."

Dalton soon began working more frequently with the Princess. “After that, I went to Australia,” he says. “My assistant went for one week because his wife had just had a baby, and Diana was obviously very against him leaving the baby for too long. I went for five weeks. I’d leave the hotel at 5 a.m., and it would be an hour’s journey. I’d do her hair at 7 a.m., and once I did her hair, I’d go back in the car to the plane and we took off at 9 a.m. She was always close behind me, and everything was
