Richard Dalton tells PEOPLE that Diana asked him to “smuggle” the papers in because of restrictions she faced inside the palace. "She wasn’t allowed to see the tabloid newspapers,” he tells PEOPLE. “One of the hairdressers smuggled them in,” Dalton shares with a laugh. “Did I say that? They were smuggled in, but it’s not to do with me,” he adds jokingly. "She used to say, ‘Richard, can you bring them in for me?’ " Dalton recalls the princess asking. "Nobody questioned it because nobody knew."

Dalton confirms that "unless she was doing a portrait or something like that," Princess Diana preferred to do her makeup herself. "If it was like a photo shoot or, you know, official pictures with Charles or the boys. Yes, it would be a makeup artist," he says. Otherwise, "she did her own makeup."

Dalton soon began working more frequently with the Princess. “After that, I went to Australia,” he says. “My assistant went for one week because his wife had just had a baby, and Diana was obviously very against him leaving the baby for too long. I went for five weeks. I’d leave the hotel at 5 a.m., and it would be an hour’s journey. DIANA’S LEGACY Renae and her Spanish-born husband, Livinio Stuyck, have mortgaged their Los Angeles home three times to keep buying famous items from Diana’s wardrobe and now run The Princess Diana Museum. A silk floral-printed dress designed by Bellville Sassoon and worn by Diana on multiple occasions sold Thursday for over $500,000 at an auction in Beverly Hills, California.
